Earnings Call
Also known as: Conference Call, Earnings Conference Call
An earnings call is the scheduled conference call where a public company discusses its quarterly or annual results with analysts and investors, including a question and answer session.
An earnings call is the live conference call a public company holds each quarter, usually right after it releases results. Management presents the numbers and the story behind them, then takes questions from sell-side analysts.
The structure
Most calls open with safe-harbor language, move to prepared remarks from the CEO and CFO, and finish with a question and answer session. The Q&A is often the most scrutinized part, because unscripted answers reveal how well management understands the business.
Why it moves stocks
The market reacts not just to the reported results but to the tone, the guidance, and how confidently management handles tough questions. A strong quarter can be undone by a shaky call, which is why preparation and a clear equity story matter.
